He was a pioneer of threshold cryptography〔Yvo Desmedt, ''Society and Group Oriented Cryptography: a New Concept'', Proceedings of CRYPTO 1987, pp. 120-127〕 and is an International Association for Cryptologic Research Fellow. He also made crucial observations that were used in the cryptanalysis of the Merkle–Hellman knapsack cryptosystem〔Y. G. Desmedt, J. P. Vandewalle and R. J. M. Govaerts, "A Critical Analysis of the Security of Knapsack Public Key Algorithms," IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, vol.
